If you're a young and fashionable bride in Malta there is only one designer label you have always dreamed about wearing. And that label is Charles & Ron.
Charles & Ron is a contemporary lifestyle brand designed by Charles Borg and Ron van Maarschalkerweerd. The two men are self-taught designers and life partners who wed in Malta this past June. Charles & Ron not only create stunning custom wedding gowns for brides in Malta and around the world, but the design duo stitch together resort wear with a distinct Mediterranean flair and a dedication to superior quality that truly highlights Maltese culture. The designers have a shop in the Corinthia Palace Hotel And Spa in Malta and are just about to open a second location in Valletta. Check out our exclusive interview with the designers below and take a peek at their pre-fall 2015 collection in the slideshow above.
What made you get involved with fashion design?
Charles learned how to sew and make clothes from a very young age, he comes from a family of dressmakers and learned from his aunties. When we met I realized he had a talent and when I moved to Malta I encouraged him to set up a studio. I wasn't involved in fashion design before we met but once we opened our first studio I gradually got more involved. We are both self-taught and fashion design was, and still is, our life and passion.
Where do you look for inspiration?
We get inspired by many things, but our main source of inspiration is our home country, Malta. We draw inspiration from our Mediterranean surroundings and different aspects of Maltese history, architecture, art and culture.
How would you describe the style in Malta?
Maltese style is very much Mediterranean. It's influenced by Italian fashion and Maltese women have a feminine flair and a love for dresses and high heels.
What inspired your current collection?
Our current collection is inspired by Ganutell, which is a Maltese art form. Hand made flowers made of silver and gold wire and silk thread. The tradition of this handmade craft dates back to the time of the order of the Knights of St. John who used to give the intricate flowers as gifts to popes and royalty. The art of Ganutell can still be admired in many Maltese churches.
What are three words that best describe your aesthetic?
Feminine, Mediterranean, Ethereal
What's next for you?
We are opening our second store in Malta in September. The shop will be our flagship store as it's located in the most prominent street in our capital city, Valletta.
We are also working on our SS16 collection which we will show during NYFW this September.
What's something no one knows about you both?
We have been together for many years and recently got married. Although all our close friends know about this as they were there to party with us!
