A retired guard dog's mommy instincts proved to be unlike any other when she assumed the role of mama to a two-week old kitten she found in the park.
Retired store owner Lorrie shared adorable photos of the two animals getting up close and personal with each other and the images prove that the two are inseparable.
Lorrie owns the Akita dog, Lily and shared how they chanced upon the kitten. According to her, she was walking Lily, a dog she bought to guard her store in South Florida, in a heavily wooded area near her family's home when she heard a noise. The park, she said, which was situated near a busy highway, was a place where most people dump their unwanted pets.
"I heard a loud funny noise as we entered the park. On the way out I decided to investigate the noise that was still quite loud thinking it could be an injured bird," she told Kittyarm.
As they walked towards the noise, 10-year-old Lily, who's never had puppies of her own, started sniffing around and pounced suddenly.
"Up she came with a two-week-old kitten in her mouth. I nearly fainted!" Even after she told Lily to drop the kitten, she wouldn't listen but at one point, Lily placed the kitty down, only to put it directly over her paws to protect it.
At first, Lorrie didn't want to bring the kitten home because it was far from being weaned. She tried to bring it to the Humane Society who declined to take care of the pet.
"So I brought her home thinking it was going to be a very long month keeping them apart and safe. Much to my surprise, Lily has adopted the kitten!"
Lorrie shared how Lily would come to her when it's time to feed the kitten and she would watch intently as if to make sure she's doing it right.
