In an effort to revive its falling sales in emerging markets, BlackBerry has unveiled BlackBerry Z3, Jakarta Edition Tuesday, May 13, at a launch event held at Ritz-Carlton hotel in the capital city of Indonesia.
Reuters reported BlackBerry Z3, Jakarta Edition is the first in a line of devices being manufactured with FIH Mobile Ltd, a unit of Taiwanese Foxconn Technology Group most popular for making consumer electronics such as Apple's iPhone and iPad.
According to the phone maker's press release, BlackBerry Z3, Jakarta Edition will be available to customers in Indonesia starting Thursday, May 15. The device is expected to go on sale through authorized retailers at a price of IDR 2,199,000 (less than $200).
"If this device allows them to grow again, even if it's just small, steady growth, that's a success in itself. That says there is still room for BlackBerry in Indonesia," Ryan Lai, market analyst at consultancy IDC, told Reuters.
Z3, Jakarta Edition is the first BlackBerry smartphone launched during the leadership of the company's Chief Executive John Chen who took the forefront in November 2013. After its launch in Indonesia, the low-cost smartphone will be next introduced in six other countries including the Philippines, India, Vietnam and Malaysia.
"If the market doesn't receive this product well, then we definitely have some negative issues to deal with," Chen said at the phone's launch event. Chen did not disclose an official sales target for the handset, but he said he expects to sell millions of units around the world.
BlackBerry Z3, Jakarta Edition has a 5-inch display, 5 MP rear camera, 8GB internal storage, a long lasting battery and claims to provide the best Bahasa typing experience on a touchscreen device. Indonesian users of the smartphone will also enjoy exclusive content such as special set of BBM(TM) Stickers featuring local characters.
"BlackBerry has changed the way millions of people around the world stay connected. From conception to delivery, the BlackBerry Z3, Jakarta Edition was designed specifically with our Indonesian customers in mind. This device gives users more ways to connect, share and communicate, providing the best tool for secure, reliable communications and collaboration with friends, family and co-workers. Priced affordably, the BlackBerry Z3, Jakarta Edition will extend the full capabilities of the BlackBerry 10 Operating System version 10.2.1 experience for a new generation of customers in Indonesia," said Chen in the press release.
