Topsy-turvy times call for topsy-turvy denim. That certainly seemed to be designers' thinking at the latest round of New York Fashion Week shows. For Spring 2024, Ralph Lauren, Proenza Schouler, Retrofête, Rachel Comey, Ulla Johnson, Brandon Maxwell, Eckhaus Latta and New York denim specialists Who Decides War all did more-is-more denim, taking the concept of "distressing" to a whole new artistic level. Call it the Glenn Martens effect.
Yes, un-basic denim is on the rise. And the easiest way to partake in said trend is with a (surprisingly timeless) pair of treated jeans. Acid-washed, dyed, patched, shredded, spliced, coated in metallic pigment or freckled with gems, beat the masses and make a head-turning pair of jeans your next buy. The key is to invest in a pair you truly love so you wear the pants, the pants don't wear you.
Once you've got that sorted, for best sartorial results, pair your look-at-me bottoms with a crisp, clean top or luxurious oversized knit. Play with proportions. Recovering minimalists, ease into the trend with muted color palettes and tonal tops and outerwear. Maximalists, the Canadian tux is your best friend.
