It's finally happened. Six years after her sudden departure as creative director of Celine, two years since announcing her imminent return to fashion, three months since hordes of Philophiles signed up on her website on July 27, 30 days past the debut window she originally put forth on Instagram, Phoebe Philo's eponymous line — or, more accurately, luxury fashion house — is here.
Needless to say, it was worth the wait. With their evocative lines, sharp tailoring, punchy details and, above all, extreme wearability, the expertly crafted pieces are everything we've come to expect from the mother of smart femininity. Think perfectly tailored high-waisted trousers that look almost regular from the front, but in fact have zippers running up their entire back seams. Silky asymmetric tops with dramatic scarf-like draping. A leather coat dress slit down the back in a V to reveal the wearer's spine. Really good coats and loafers.
Material-wise, Philo favors luxe wools, satins, silks and especially leathers. Color-wise, she kept mostly to a muted palette of black, "stucco" white and army greens with a few stray pops of cherry red, a Spring 2024 favorite.
Unsurprisingly — and despite the sky-high price points — much of the stock is already sold out. But don't despair. The clothes, shoes and accessories that hit the market yesterday comprise but the first of three "Edits," or online drops, slated to take place between now and December.
The line will only ever be available on PhoebePhilo.com. So our advice, beyond saving up many, many coffers, is to watch that space closely. If ever there were investment pieces worth shelling out for, these are it.
