Master Cozy Season With These Shearling Pieces

Cozy season is here. A time to quasi-hibernate. Binge-stream the shows we couldn't find time for when the sun was out after 5:00 p.m. And, when we do endeavor to leave the house, bundle ourselves in snuggle-worthy shearling.

To think it was a little over two decades ago that one Oprah Winfrey put UGGs on her "Favorite Things" list. Since then, fashion's obsession with all things fleece- and faux fleece-lined has evolved far beyond fuzzy boots. Beyond coats and jackets even.

Thinking about how to add value to the longtime trend, many designers are focusing on joyful, if slightly impractical, shearling footwear and accessories. To wit: Nearly all of the most buzzed-about names in fashion — Burberry, Telfar, Gucci, Bottega Veneta, Khaite, Jil Sander, Saint Laurent, Prada — have either trimmed or covered their It bags in fluff.

From Acne Studios, Rachel Comey, TOTEME, Yves Salomon and more we've seen bucket hats and baseball caps that turn the traditional sleek-outside-fuzzy-inside formula on its head. Then there's the growing trend of slip-on-and-go shearling sandals, already cosigned by Hailey Bieber and Sienna Miller. The former wore fuzzy crisscross Prada slides with a taupe yoga set and a distressed leather bomber. The latter paired Rag & Bone's would-be Birkenstock Arizonas with gray socks, jeans and a kelly green sweatshirt.

That's the great thing about a shock-value shearling add-on. It'll add edge and an extra dose of coziness to your everyday looks. Personally, when it comes to furry footwear, we're partial to Prada's kitten-heel slides, Hereu's shearling ballet flats (balletcore, meet cozycore) or Loewe's riff on the Birkenstock Gizeh, which'll require tabi socks in cooler climes.

Now, none of that's to say designers aren't producing more "traditional" shearling pieces still worthy of a second look. Coperni did a biker-inspired bodysuit with a faux shearling collar that proponents of the no-pants trend will love wearing with sheer black tights and moto boots. Jacquemus' playful fleece tube top, complete with totally frivolous pockets, is already nearly sold out. And Isabel Marant's Y-shaped Feliz vest is giving us serious Saint Laurent heart coat vibes.

Caught a case of the warm and fuzzies yet? We thought so. A word to the wise: Don't go full yeti. Pick one statement shearling piece as the focal point of your outfit and pair it with a knit dress or a statement sweater, something high pile.
